Boerne Champion recorded another impressive win Friday night when the Chargers hosted Cedar Creek at Boerne ISD Stadium in the district opener for both teams.
The Chargers tallied 60 and 62 points in their first two games, and while they didn’t hit the 60-point mark on Friday in a game delayed by about 30 minutes because of the weather, they had another dominating performance and defeated the Eagles, 55-0.
Champion (3-0, 1-0) will be on the road Friday at Kyle Lehman.
As well as the defense has played this year, it was their first shutout of the season and the Charger D made an impact right away after Jaxon Barnes picked off an Eagles pass on the third play of the game.
Champion's defense also had an interception returned for a touchdown that was called back because of a penalty on the Eagles’ second drive and would have made it three Pick-6s in three games and would have likely pushed them past the 60-point mark for the third time this year.
“I’m super proud of our defense,” Chargers coach Blane Ellis said. “The front seven is playing a physical brand of ball.”
The Barnes interception set up the Chargers on the Cedar Creek 30-yard line and they scored four plays later after Caleb Farias took it to the house from the 15-yard line to make it 6-0 after a missed extra point.
Champion scored on its first four drives and ended the first quarter leading 27-0. Ryder Flugence ran it in from 62 yards, Will Burgess hauled in a 49-yard pass from Flugence and then Mason Clayton snagged a 25-yard TD pass from Flugence as the Chargers scored four TDs on just 13 plays.
After the teams traded a couple of turnovers in the second quarter, Farias took over in the second quarter with touchdown runs of 34 and 29 yards to put the Chargers up 41-0 right before halftime.
Farias has seven rushing touchdowns this year and says the offensive line gets a lot of the credit.
“We have a great O-line, they’re great pass blockers and run blockers and nothing is possible without the O-line,” he said. “Our offense is very explosive; we have receivers who can make plays if you throw it up to them.”
It basically went to a running clock in the second half, but the Chargers still managed two more touchdowns. Julian Navarette tossed a 14-yard pass to Finn Ryan on Champion’s opening drive of the third quarter to make it 48-0.
Later in the game, Chargers RB Easton Hamel capped the scoring with a 5-yard run into the end, while Will Hankins and Ethan Haines took turns kicking extra points.
Cedar Creek missed out on two scoring opportunities and hooked a 40-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter and had another unsuccessful FG try from the 25-yard line late in the second stanza after a botched hold.
