GARDEN RIDGE – Boerne High School competed in a battle of unbeatens when it traveled to play Davenport High School, and eventually overcame both the early season non-district test and an hour lightning delay in Friday night’s 30-21 win.
The teams played until the 1:12 mark of the third quarter when the weather arrived, but Boerne was eventually awarded the victory.
The Greyhounds improved their season record to 3-0 before they return to Boerne ISD Stadium for a 7 p.m. Veterans Appreciation Game and non-district finale against Somerset on Sept. 18. Individuals with a Military ID will have free admission.
The Wolves, meanwhile, dropped their year mark to 2-1 before they travel to Canyon Lake for a 7 p.m. game on Sept. 24.
“Playing Davenport really gets you ready for a tough district,” Boerne head football coach Brett Sawyer said after his team’s win. “You schedule teams like that in non-district because you have to be physical and focused in tight games.”
Boerne jumped ahead 7-0 at the 6:56 mark of the first quarter after Callan Combs’ 10-yard touchdown run and Diego Jimenez’s first of four extra points.
Combs eventually ran 26 times for 313 yards and two touchdowns.
Boerne quarterback Grant Sweeney’s 27-yard touchdown strike to Logan Kolle then set up a 14-0 advantage at the 2:43 mark of the opening period.
Sweeney completed 11 of his 22 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns.
The Greyhounds’ defense then recovered a Davenport fumble at the 1:50 mark of the first quarter and tackled the Wolves in the end zone at 7:47 mark of the second period to give their team a 16-0 lead.
Davenport got on the board when Tristan Torrez found Zayden Garza on a 25-yard touchdown pass and Kyle Kessler added his first of three extra points to make it a 16-7 score at the 3:46 mark of the second quarter.
Combs’ two-yard touchdown run then gave Boerne another 16-point advantage at the 1:57 mark before Davenport’s Jax Zamarripa answered with a 3-yard touchdown run that cut Boerne’s lead to 23-14 with 43.2 seconds until halftime.
Davenport temporarily retained the momentum as the second half began because it moved within 23-21 after Zamarripa’s one-yard touchdown run at the 8:51 mark of the third quarter.
But, Boerne bounced back when Alex Martinez and Cooper Thompson intercepted passes from Davenport’s Torrez. Those third-quarter plays bookended a Greyhound scoring drive that resulted in Sweeney’s one-yard touchdown pass to Beau Dayoc and finalized the game’s score at 30-21 at the five-minute mark of the period.
Torrez completed 11 of his 18 passes for 127 yards and one touchdown in Davenport's loss.
