Hounds back at home to host Somerset

Boerne High is back home Friday and will close out non-district play at home against Somerset. The Greyhounds and the Bulldogs kick off at 7 p.m.

After Friday, BHS opens league play on the road at Alamo Heights. Before the Greyhounds can focus on their game with the Mules, they face Somerset, a team that Boerne coach Brett Sawyer said is one of the biggest around.

“They’re huge and one of the biggest teams in the state. They average more than 300 pounds across the line,” he said. “Their linemen are big and they have two Division 1 receivers; they’re a good team.”

Boerne is coming off a weather shortened game at Davenport last week. The Greyhounds were leading 30-21 late in the third quarter and then the players were removed from the field because of the weather. After a wait, they decided to end the game with just over a minute left in the quarter.

“We started off well but had some trouble on one of the drives and should have been up 28-7,” Sawyer said. “We felt like we controlled the whole game and the score didn’t reflect how the game was going. I feel like we left 17 points on the field in the first half.”

While teams are dealing with injuries at this point, the Hounds seem to be holding up fine in that area and have been bothered more by sickness than injury. Sawyer feels like it has kept the team from hitting its stride.

“Injury-wise, we’re okay. We’re struggling health-wise, but we’re going to be fine,” he said. “We’re getting there, last year we struggled early before we started rolling. The goal is always to be clicking by district, that’s the goal and we’re getting there.”

Callan Combs had a great game running the ball against Davenport and tallied 310 yards on 26 carries with two touchdowns.

Grant Sweeney completed 11 of 21 passes for 129 yards and two TDS against one interception, while adding 26 rushing yards on four attempts.

Beau Dayoc and Lane Aaron both hauled in touchdown passes, while the defense was led by Cooper Thompson and Cash Gatlin, who both came up with 10 tackles in the game.

Thompson, Ronnie Brooks and Alex Martinez recorded one interception each and Rory Hotchkin had a sack and a fumble recovery.

Somerset is 2-1 and beat Southside in a weather-shortened game, 35-18. The Bulldogs lost to Alamo Heights, 43-14, and beat Veterans Memorial last week, 35-0.
