Funding goes to improve Webster’s Corner
The Kendall County Commissioners Court has set aside $100,000 of its 2026-27 budget for improvements to Texas 46 West — the first funding contributed to improving motorist safety on the deadly stretch.
Precinct 1 Commissioner Jennifer McCall said the $100,000 will support the improvements planned for Webster’s Corner — the site of some of the most severe crashes — including “Jersey barriers,” crash cushions, pavement widening and guard fence work at that curve.
The total Webster’s Corner treatment package is estimated at roughly $630,000.
This is the first local money committed to the 46 West safety project and the first formal Kendall County–Texas Department of Transportation partnership on the corridor.
McCall said discussions began with TxDOT officials after Bandera County passed a resolution urging action to make the 11-mile stretch between Interstate 10 East and Texas 16 safer for motorists.
That stretch runs from Boerne to Bandera.
“I saw the resolution they (Bandera County) passed in April and requested it be more specific,” she said. “We wanted timelines, and dollar amounts, and specifics on what actions might or can be taken.”
She said residents need to know TxDOT heard their concerns when representatives attended a Kendall County commissioners meeting in April.
At that session, McCall said someone mentioned the use of “Jersey barriers,” which are modular obstructions of concrete or plastic that divide traffic lanes, safeguard workers in construction zones and guide groups of people, according to an online explainer.
They were originally standardized by the New Jersey State Highway Department, hence the name.
“Because they heard the citizens and listened, they added the Jersey barriers,” McCall said. “As a result, we were able to add them and TxDOT was able to give us a price for what the Webster’s Curve work will cost” the county, she said.
According to the county representative, “I got a number from TxDOT in order to make sure that would happen, and that’s the $100,000.”
The commissioner added TxDOT has set September 2027 as a start date to work on Webster’s Corner, an arrangement “we’ll be pressing them on, in hopes of moving it up,” she added.
McCall credited the public meetings with relaying to TxDOT how important safety is along 46, and for bringing solutions to the table.
“It was extremely important ... when we have citizens who have information, that we get in touch with, and get that to TxDOT. That’s the way it should work,” she said. “And this was a perfect example of that.”
The commissioner added, “There’s just a lot of people who have to go through there, on their way home, to work and just daily traffic. We’re just wanting to protect the lives of all those who travel that stretch of road.”
