It’s always special whenever Boerne High plays Boerne Champion in any sport, but last Friday’s volleyball contest between the Greyhounds and Chargers had a little more riding on its since it was a battle of unbeaten teams in 26-5A.
Friday’s winner would be the lone undefeated team in the district as 26-5A closes out firstround action on Tuesday, and it was the Lady Greyhounds that slid into first place in district and remained perfect in league play.
Boerne won Friday’s match at home, 25-23, 25-24, 25-19, 25-18 and improved to 24-4 overall and 5-0 in district after Friday’s win.
BHS, which entered the week ranked No. 14 in the last Texas Girls Coaches Association poll, closed out the first round of district Tuesday against John Jay. The Hounds open the second round on Friday at Harlandale.
Champion slips to 24-7 overall and 4-1 in district. They hosted Alamo Heights on Tuesday to close out the first round of 26-5A action, with second place on the line since the Chargers and the Mules both lost to the Greyhounds and entered the contest at 4-1. After their match with the Mules, Champion plays John Jay on Friday.
Champion and Boerne have met five times in their history, and Friday’s win was Boerne’s second in the series, which puts them at 2-3 against the Chargers all-time. The Chargers swept in 2024, and last year the schools split after the Lady Hounds won at Champion and lost at home, which makes Friday’s win Boerne’s first at home against the Chargers.
In Friday’s match, Bella Pettet led Boerne with 12 kills, while Mallory Miles and Ava Seamans finished with 11 kills each. Pettet, Lauren Magnus and Kiley Coffland all served up 2 aces, Seamans came up with 6 blocks and Brook Summers added 4 blocks and Pettet had 3 blocks.
Pettet registered 23 digs, Magnus recorded 16 digs, while Coffland and Riley Caldwell chipped in with 15 digs and Magnus tallied 36 assists.
For the Chargers, Addison Menden led the team in kills with 21 kills and Finley Weikle added 17 kills, while Brady Cooksey dropped in 3 aces and Aleah Ramirez had 2 aces.
Abby Marizcurrena came up with 4 blocks, Olivia Sansone had 3 blocks and Sydney Hass added 2 blocks.
Brielle Boothe recorded 26 digs and Hannah Perez tallied 11 digs, while Cooksey totaled 8 digs and 42 assists.
