Comfort High is coming off its bye week and opens district play Friday at home against Poth. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The good news for the Bobcats is that they are close to 100 percent healthy entering the game. CHS coach Jay Rieken said all but one player should be good to go and the one player that’s questionable still might play against the Pirates depending on how it goes this week.
“At this point, there’s one I’m worried about, other than that, we’re 100 percent,” Rieken said. “I’m going to decide something by Wednesday on that one player.”
Poth is coming off a 19-14 win at Blanco last Friday and has the inside track to the district title with that victory. Texas Football magazine had Blanco winning the district crown, but the Pirates won the contest that Rieken attended.
It was tied 14-14 at halftime and then the defenses took over. Poth kicked a field goal and came up with a safety in the second half to outscore Blanco, 5-0.
“It was a heavyweight battle, it was a good oldschool game. They were swinging back and forth; and they got after it,” Rieken said. “I thought it was going to be close and could go either way. Poth countered Blanco’s speed and Blanco was really physical.”
Poth likes to run their quarterback a lot, but Rieken said the Pirates starting QB was in a sling after the game and wasn’t sure if he would be ready by Friday. Either way, Rieken said the Pirates will run the ball a lot.
“They do everything well, but they like to run the ball,” he said. “They have good backs and a good running quarterback, but their strength is their offensive line.”
Poth is 4-1 overall and 1-0 in district, while Comfort went 1-3 through non-district. The Bobcats beat Brady in their season opener but have dropped three straight and lost to Crystal City, Ingram Moore and Johnson City. They look to get back on track Friday against Poth.
After facing the Pirates, they have Nixon Smiley, Stockdale, Karnes City, YMLA and Blanco on the schedule.
