Greyhounds resting, fine tuning during bye week

After a big win at Alamo Heights last Friday, the Greyhound football team can take a break and catch their breath as they prepare for the remainer of their district schedule.

Boerne High (5-0, 1-0) is off this Friday and resumes league play on Thursday, Oct. 8, at BISD Stadium against Long Creek.

Even though the Greyhounds are undefeated, BHS coach Brett Sawyer said he still feels like they haven’t played a complete game.

“We were a lot closer to that after Friday (against Alamo Heights). We put some good drives together,” he said. “I finally felt like we got into a rhythm and started executing way more consistently, but I feel like we can still do better.”

After Long Creek, the Greyhounds visit Liberty Hill, host Veterans Memorial, play at New Braunfels and then close out the regular season at home against Legacy Ranch.

Sawyer said they’ll skip the morning practices this week and will work with the team during the class period all week. They’ll do a little bit of stretching on Friday and get the weekend off before resuming workouts on Monday.

The Greyhounds have fared well on the injury front and have been bothered more with sickness than injuries at this point, but Sawyer said they’re looking better there as well.

“We’re finally getting over sickness, and injury-wise we lucked out on a couple of issues,” Sawyer said.

The Greyhounds are coming off an emotional 38-31 win over the Mules. Boerne tallied 35 of their 38 points in the second half, but part of the problem was that they didn’t really have the ball much in the first half.

“We ran 21 plays in the first half and had three drives and two of them were long drives,” Sawyer said. “On one of them we went for it on 4th and goal and didn’t get it and the other one we kicked a field goal. We were playing well and those two drives went the length of the field.”

Things opened up in the second half as Boerne scored five touchdowns. The Hounds tallied three touchdowns in the third quarter and had the first two TDs of the fourth to pull ahead 38-21 with 4:51 left. The Mule tallied the final 10 points, but Sawyer said he was never worried.

“I felt like we were in control,” he said.
