Well, the 2026 Homecoming Game between Boerne High and Veterans Memorial will certainly be remembered as a wild and crazy one, but one that ended with a Greyhound victory.
BHS defeated Veterans Memorial Friday night at home 49-7 and stayed perfect at 8-0 and bumped their district record to 4-0.
A fire on one of the light poles in the parking lot at halftime halted the game with Boerne leading 35-7. The game was delayed for almost two hours because they had to turn off all the lights at the stadium to fix the problem. The game resumed at 10:25 p.m. and went to a running clock and ended quickly, but not before the Greyhounds scored two more touchdowns to get a homecoming win.
Boerne coach Brett Sawyer said a win is a win.
"It was a weird night, but district wins are hard to get and to get one is a blessing," Sawyer said, "glad to have it."
Speaking of fire, the Greyhounds came out smoking in the first half as Grant Sweeney tossed five touchdown passes, four of them to Zach Freasier. The other went to Jacob Hicks as Boerne had five possessions in the first half and scored on all five.
It was 28-0 before the Patriots got on the board with a 10-play drive that covered 71 yards and chewed almost five minutes off the clock to make it 28-7 after Zion Gray ran it in from the 2-yard line after a penalty on BHS gave Veterans Memorial a 1st and goal.
The Hounds answered with the final score of the first half as Freasier and Sweeney connected for the fourth TD of the game on a pass and catch of 18 yards to make it 35-7 at the break that turned out to be a two-hour break.
Sawyer said it was one of their best halves of the season.
"It was a great start," he said. "I'm happy with it."
At halftime, the coaches met and decided to wait it out and play since it was a district game.
"We wanted to finish it out," Sawyer said.
It resumed at 10:25 p.m. and Kole Traylor returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown to make it 42-7.
The Greyhounds kicked off and the Patriots didn't cover the ball, so the Greyhounds jumped on it at about the Pats' 35. Callan Combs took the handoff on the Boerne drive and took it to the end zone for the 49-7 lead.
On the Patriots best drive of the second half, they moved the ball to the Boerne 13, but the Hounds didn't give up any second-half points as the defense held. The clock only stopped twice in the second half, once at the two-minute timeout and another time because of an injury.
