Eagles edge Holy Cross on homecoming night, 23-21

Geneva School of Boerne made the most of its homecoming football game on Friday night and earned a hard-fought 23-21 win against Holy Cross of San Antonio to secure the second playoff spot from TAPPS Division III District 3.

“I couldn’t be more proud,” said Geneva School of Boerne head football coach Adam Foren. “We played outstanding on defense. It’s a credit to our defensive staff. Championship-type teams have to win in different ways.”

The Eagles improved their season record to 8-1 and district record to 4-1. They will wrap up the regular season and continue to prepare for November’s TAPPS Division III postseason during the 7 p.m. district finale at Houston St. Francis Episcopal School on Oct. 30.

The Knights, meanwhile, dropped their year mark to 3-5 and league mark to 2-3 before they host league mate Corpus Christi St. John Paul II Academy at the same time.

Geneva leaned on quarterback Caleb Quitadamo’s fast start to build up a double-digit, first-half lead. His fourth straight completion to start the game resulted in a four-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Hanover and Parker Eiland added a successful PAT to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead at the 7:11 mark of the first quarter.

The Eagles continued to soar. Quitadamo completed his first eight passes of his team’s second drive to start the night 12-for-12 before his first incompletion.

Quitadamo eventually finished the outing 17-of-25 for 146 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran 19 times for 69 yards.

Eiland wrapped up the scoring drive with a 24-yard field attempt to extend the home team’s advantage to 10-0 at the 8:08 mark of the second period.

Holy Cross leaned on its run game to cut into the deficit. Michael Gonzalez’s eight-yard touchdown run and Crew Hudson’s successful PAT made it a 10-7 score at the 5:59 mark of the quarter.

Geneva’s Quitadamo turned to the aerial again and connected with Luke Abuzeid for a 55-yard touchdown pass.

Holy Cross’ defense immediately responded with a block on Eiland’s extra point attempt to keep Geneva’s lead at 16-7 with 3:21 remaining in the first half.

Momentum remained on Holy Cross’ side as the second half began. The Knights quickly stormed down the field on AJ Eguia’s 55-yard touchdown run.

Eguila finished the event with 141 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Geneva did hang on to a 16-13 advantage after its defense prevented Eguia from punching in a two-point conversion run at the 8:20 mark of the third quarter.

Quitadamo then produced a six-yard touchdown pass to Chase Doran to set up his team’s 23-13 lead at the 4:40 mark of the period.

Holy Cross remained competitive with Eguia’s one-yard touchdown run and William Lee’s two-point conversion pass to Hudson to cut Geneva’s lead to 23-21 at the 9:56 mark of the fourth quarter.

The Knights held the ball again late, but Lee’s pass was picked off by Geneva’s Walt Teague with 52 ticks on the clock to wrap up the Eagles’ win.
