John Thomas Buel

September 20, 1943 – January 15, 2022

John Thomas Buel passed away peacefully at the age of 78 with his three daughters by his side on January 15, 2022.

Tom was born September 20, 1943, in San Antonio to parents Col. Jack and Nellie Buel. He grew up in Helotes, Texas, where he developed a strong connection and love for nature and animals at a very early age. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, music and playing the guitar.

During his teen years he learned how to work with leather, which grew into a favorite pastime and hobby into his adulthood. He produced beautifully hand-carved designs on wallets, purses, guitar straps and belts for family and friends. Tom was a gunsmith, gun and coin collector and an advocate for wildlife preservation.

In previous years Tom was a member of the Helotes Lions Club and the Boerne Shooting Club. Tom retired in 2002 after 34 years from UTHSC at San Antonio and continued to enjoy his childhood home on the ranch in Helotes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Col. Jack & Nellie Buel, and brother in-law George Hanks. He is survived by his daughters, Katherine Buel of Boerne, Texas, Elizabeth Buel of San Antonio and Natalie (Randy) Mund of Boerne; his three grandchildren, Travis, Ryan and Lyndsey Mund; and his sister, Ellen Todd Hanks.

A Celebration of Tom’s Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of John T. Buel can be made to the Glenn Biggs Institute for Alzheimer’s & Neurodegenerative Diseases
