Everything about Curington Elementary School reflects its school colors, red and white. But now you can add purple to the mix, as Curington has been named a state Purple Star Campus for the 2023-24 school year.
Gov. Greg Abbott Thursday announced the 150 state public schools receiving the Purple Star Campus designation. Abbott launched the program in 2019 to recognize public schools for their exceptional commitment to supporting and meeting the unique needs of military-connected students and their families.
“This is a very-well deserved honor for Curington Elementary,” Boerne ISD Director of Communications Brayn Benway said. “Their administration, teachers, and staff go above and beyond to ensure that military families feel honored and welcome.”
The elementary school on Adler Drive was nominated last year by former Curington Principal Matt Myers (now Boerne Middle School South principal).
“We are honored that Curington was recognized as a Purple Star campus,” Myers said. “Our goal is to connect military families and make them feel comfortable and supported at school.”
Measures taken by the school in support of its military families include:
• A military liaison, (2022-23, Dayna Comley; this year, Assistant Principal Dawn Adamek).
• A page on the school’s website for military families.
• A campus transition program. Curington staff met with active military families as they enrolled and transitioned to the campus. Staff then followed up with the students and families, to ensure they felt welcome and were transitioning to their new campus well.
• A resolution from Superintendent Dr. Thomas Price presented to the campus about being a strong military support campus.
“We commit to raising awareness about the experiences and needs of military families and students,” Price said. “We will work to implement programs that address the specific needs of military students, including tailored transition support, flexible curricula, and access to mental health services.
“We proclaim our commitment to supporting military families and students year-round,” Price added.
Abbott said the program was created to encourage Texas public schools to expand resources and tools available on their campuses to help them meet the unique educational needs of military-connected students and their families “Texas proudly supports the brave men and women of our U.S. military and their families, and that includes the nearly 200,000 military-connected students attending public schools across our state,” the governor said. “Together, we are giving back to our brave military families and paving the way for a brighter future for all Texas students.”
Benway said Curington offers the right atmosphere to be the right choice for the award.
“Curington has a great campus atmosphere that is palpable as soon as you step foot on campus. They treat everyone, including military families, with dignity and respect,” Benway said. “We could not be prouder and more excited for everyone at Curington to be named a Purple Star Campus.”
