Greyhounds hit the road once again

After a rousing homecoming victory over Gregory-Portland last Friday, the Boerne High football team will hit the road again for their fourth road game in five weeks.

After a rousing homecoming victory over Gregory-Portland last Friday, the Boerne High football team will hit the road again for their fourth road game in five weeks.

BHS coach Che Hendrix said they’d much rather be at home, but that’s how the schedule played out this year.

“It stinks, but it’s all part of it. (Last week) was a very welcomed week. You could tell the difference when we ran out of the tunnel, the end zone was full and you could feel the energy,” he said. “We love to play at home, but it’s back on the road and we’ll take them one week at a time.”

Actually, Boerne (3-1) is on the road for its next two. After playing Salado this week, the Hounds go on bye week and won’t play again until Oct. 6 when they visit the Honey Bowl to take on Uvalde.

After that, they are home for three straight before closing out the regular season at Fredericksburg in early November.

It’s easy to understand why Hendrix wants to play at home after last Friday’s 50-22 win at BISD Stadium over previously undefeated Gregory-Portland before 6,203 fans in this year’s homecoming tilt.

The 5A Wildcats came in ranked No. 10 in one poll but the Hounds took it to them.

BHS scored on its opening drive and then came up with a defensive touchdown less than a minute later.

After that, the Greyhounds blocked a punt to set up another score and BHS was leading 20-0 halfway through the first quarter and Gregory- Portland never recovered.

The Wildcats had a really good running back on its roster but the Hounds took GP out of its running game with such a big lead.

“They have a lot of good players but we had that fast start and once we got ahead, they had to go away from their biggest strength and we made them kind of one dimensional,” Hendrix said.

Hank Hendrix tossed 5 TD passes, 2 to Brooks Perez, 1 to Gavin Hankins, Walker Hill and McCoy Bruce, while T.J. Dement busted loose on a 70-yard TD run and tallied 135 rushing yards in the game.

Defensively, Carlos Requena finished with 9 tackles, Mason Stewart had 8 stops, Ryan Cooper recorded 7 tackles and Javi Benavides came up with 6 tackles.

Salado enters the contest at 2-2 and has been up and down this year. They tallied 45 against Fredericksburg and 48 against Rudder, but were shutout by Malakoff in a 42-0 loss and are coming off a 55-28 setback to Little River Academy.

The Eagles are led by 6-foot-6 quarterback Luke Law.

“They got the quarterback back and he’s good,” Coach Hendrix said. “They have a good running back and good receivers. They have some skill kids back from last year but they’ve struggled defensively. They lost a lot of players on that defensive side.”

One thing Hendrix said they need to get better at is reducing penalties. They had reduced them with each game and were down to three against Antonian, but had seven last week, something the coach said they need to clean up.

“We had two touchdowns called back on penalties and we need to communicate a little better but as far as the energy and the effort, it was fantastic and we want to continue to build on that,” he said. “We want to chase that perfect game, we may never get there, but we’re going to keep chasing it.”
