SAN ANTONIO – Boerne’s hopes of making it back to the 4A DI state championship game were dashed by La Vernia Friday night at Comalander Stadium.
The Bears took Friday’s back-and-forth contest and turned in a strong second half to record the 42-31 win.
Boerne’s season ends at 10-2 and before Thanksgiving after they played almost up until Christmas last year.
Friday’s contest was a see-saw battle with neither team able to get the upper hand until La Vernia did it late
in the game with a fumble recovery and a touchdown to get a double-digit lead.
The contest featured 10 ties or lead changes with the final momentum swing going in the favor of the Bears.
Boerne held a 17-14 lead at halftime after Jaxon Baize and Adam Hicks recorded touchdown runs, to go with a Carson Cooper 22-yard field goal.
It was quite a night for Hicks who finished the game with roughly 250 rushing yards and a TD.
The second half belonged to a Bears team that outscored the Greyhounds 14-7 in both the third and fourth quarters.
La Vernia’s two TDs in the third gave the Bears a 28-24 advantage going into the fourth quarter. But Boerne responded and Baize gave Boerne its final lead of the game on a 5-yard run for his third rushing touchdown of the night.
Cooper booted the extra point and the Greyhounds were up 31-28 with 6:51 left in the contest but the lead wouldn’t hold.
La Vernia answered with a 7-play, 50-yard drive and pulled ahead for good at 35-31 after Aden Hajek found the end zone on a 2-yard plunge with 4:25 left for his fourth rushing score of the night.
The Greyhounds had a chance to retake the lead, starting at their own 25 after the kickoff. But a fumble on the second play of the drive gave the ball back to the Bears with 3:48 left.
La Vernia burned some clock and forced Boerne to use its three timeouts. The Bears moved the ball to the 1-yard line and from there punched it in on an Isaiah Cisneros plunge with 1:31 left and it became a two-possession game at 42-31.
Boerne was out of timeouts at that point but still moved the ball to the La Vernia 27 before they ran out of time and the celebration began for La Vernia team that advances to face Davenport on Thanksgiving weekend. The Wolves beat Beeville Jones, 63-28 on Friday night.
It was the final game for 26 Boerne seniors listed on the roster.
