Col. William James O’Connor

Feb. 1, 1942 Dec. 18, 2024

Col. William James O’Connor, a devoted husband and father, esteemed military officer and respected professional, passed away peacefully surrounded by his children on Dec. 18, 2024, in Boerne, Texas. He was 82.

Born on Feb. 1, 1942, in Leominster, Massachusetts, William dedicated his life to service: to his family, his faith, his country and his community. William was preceded in death by his parents, James and Cecelia (Farrell) O’Connor, his sister, Anne, and his beloved wife of 49 years, Karen.

He is survived by his loving children and their families: one daughter, Elizabeth (Tommy) Tolar and their children, Sarah and William Tolar; and two sons, Patrick, his wife, Heather, and their daughters, Kira and Brynne O’Connor; and Matthew, his wife, Catherine, and their daughters, Isabella and Brigid O’Connor.

“Papa” cherished every moment spent with his children and grandchildren, relishing family gatherings and creating lasting memories. He was also dedicated to building friendships, cherishing both recent acquaintances and those he had known for many years. Ret. Col. O’Connor served his country with distinction for 26 years in the U.S. Air Force. His distinguished career included two tours in Vietnam, two tours at the Pentagon and two tours at the military personnel center at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Upon retiring from the Air Force, he embraced Texas as his home, settling in his beloved Boerne, though his New England accent remained a charming reminder of his roots. After his military service, William embarked on a successful career at USAA, where he led digital transformation of the organization, modernizing its operations and enhancing services for its members. This work laid the groundwork for USAA’s robust digital presence today.

He proudly served as a volunteer firefighter for the Windcrest Volunteer Fire Department in the 1980s, demonstrating his commitment to community service. A lifelong learner and avid reader, William held a master’s degree in computer science from American University. He approached every new challenge with intellectual curiosity, immersing himself in the intricacies of the insurance industry upon joining USAA.

It was while studying business as an undergraduate at the University of Dayton (Go Flyers!) that he met his beloved wife, Karen. He maintained a keen interest in current events, rarely missing a day without reading several newspapers cover to cover.

Funeral services were held Jan. 11, 2025, at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Boerne, followed by military honors at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Services were entrusted to Ebensberger-Fisher Funeral Home. If you would like to leave condolences, please visit www.ebensberger-fisher. com.
