Karen Martha Wetzel

May 21, 1951 April 13, 2025

Karen Martha Wetzel, born May 21, 1951, died on April 13, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones. She was a light to all who knew her; her kindess and love knew no bounds.

Karen graduated from Fox Lane High school in 1969 in Bedford, New York. She later graduated from Centenary College for Women with an associate’s degree in 1971 in Hackettstown, New Jersey.

After living in New York, New Jersey and France (as a teenager in the 1960s), Karen moved to Texas “because my family was here.” She remained for nearly 40 years and when asked, “Why Boerne? Simple; Boerne used to remind me of the town I lived in as a child (small town) ... I have many friends and amazing memories here. Boerne is my forever home.”

Karen never let the grass grow under her feet. She took a job as a legal secretary in San Antonio for most of her legal career. She enjoyed the challenge and thrill of making a change in the world.

Karen always made a difference. After her career, Karen donated her time at the Season’s Thrift Shop and published Kuntry Kitchen with the Hill Country Recorder. Karen volunteered at the Senior Center, actively participated in Boerne Together, and never let her typewriter get cold with letters to the editor.

Those who knew Karen can attest to her wisdom and wit. She loved people and loved to laugh. She made friends with everyone and performed many acts of random kindness anonymously — we may never know the extent of Karen’s kindness and love for humanity.

If you were lucky enough to be on Karen’s mailing list you received one of her dazzling cards that were usually 3D, full of glitter or music. Karen will be missed. Heaven gained a wonderful friend, sister, daughter and most of all “Aunt Karen.”

Graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. May 17, 2025, at the Boerne Cemetery section NIII, Block 408, Lot 11, followed by a Celebration of Life held in her honor at 10:30 a.m. at the Cibolo Nature Center (left of the pavilion), 140 City Park Road in Boerne.
