SAN ANTONIO – The Boerne ISD aquatic programs from Boerne High and Boerne Champion had several swimmers and divers compete at last weekend’s Region VII-5A meet at the Southwest ISD Aquatic Center where the Chargers broke nine pool records.
Only the top two finishers at regionals automatically qualify for state, while eight more – regardless of region – have a chance to make to state as wildcards.
UIL swim is divided into eight regions and the top two fastest in each event advance, while the next eight fastest swimmers qualify as a wildcard regardless of region for 24 total in each event headed to state.
Those calls ups were expected to be announced early this week.
The Boerne Champion girls swam away with this year’s Region VII-5A title after they scored 377 points to beat second-place Smithson Valley by 99 points (278).
The BHS girls finished 9th with 120.5 points.
On the boys side, Champion finished second with 310 points behind firstplace Austin Liberal Arts and Science Academy (LASA), which scored 429 points.
The Boerne boys were 11th with 74 points.
Champion’s Bexon Harrison and Kate Canales were chosen as the Boys and Girls Athletes of the Meet, an honor they also received at the district meet after they earned the most points, while Chargers coach Scott Slay was chosen as the Girls Coach of the Meet on Saturday.
Bexon Harrison broke two individual pool records in the 200 and 100 free, Will Harrison broke the pool record in the 50 free, Kate Canales claimed two individual pool records in the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly, while four Charger relays also broke pool records.
The girls 200-yard medley and the 400-freestyle relay, along with the boys 200- and 400-freestyle relays all claimed pool records at the SWISD Aquatics Center, which has only been open a few years.
