Chargers softball faces Antonian in non-district game

Boerne Champion took a break from its district softball schedule and tangled with Antonian in a non-district game Tuesday at Charger Field and came up short, 17-4, in five innings.

Champion is 2-3 overall and resumed 26-5A action by hosting Alamo Heights Friday. They’ll visit Boerne High Tuesday for the first meeting between the two BISD schools.

Antonian batted 14 in the top of the first as they took control early by scoring 9 runs for the 9-0 lead before the Chargers had even batted.

In the bottom of the first, lead-off hitter Torin Tucker smashed a solo shot over the center-field wall to make it 9-1, but the Apaches answered with 6 more runs in the top of the second for the 15-1 lead.

Champion’s best inning came in the bottom of the third when a single by Tatum Cruz and a walk by Tucker put two runners on with one out. Anna Hurst tripled to bring in Cruz and Tucker and make it 15-4.

After that, Antonian plated 2 runs in the top of the fourth and it was 17-4.

Champion put on a few base runners in the fourth and fifth frames, but couldn’t push in a run and the mercy rule kicked in after five innings.

The Chargers finished with 5 hits, including the home run by Tucker, who walked, had an RBI and scored twice, while Hurst tripled and singled, pushed in 2 runs and scored. Mylie Parker singled and Cruz singled, walked and scored.

Hurst started in the circle and went 1.1 innings and struck out a batter. She was replaced by Parker, who finished out the game and threw the final 3.2 frames and fanned 5.
