With just a few softball games left in the 26-5A regular season, several of the teams are scrambling to try and get into the playoffs and every win matters.
Champion’s 12- 11 extra-inning win at Pieper on Tuesday certainly helped its cause but there is still work to do for the Lady Chargers with three games left on the schedule heading into Friday.
The Chargers are 5-8 in district and 7-9 overall. Champion hosted New Braunfels Friday and then closes out the regular season next week with Pieper and Kerrville Tivy.
Three of the teams in 26-5A have 5 wins (Champion, Boerne and Alamo Heights) and they are all chasing Kerrville Tivy for the last playoff spot up for grabs in the district. The Lady Antlers have 7 wins.
Tuesday’s game was tied 2-2 after two innings and then the Chargers went up 4-2 with a couple of runs in the third, but the Lady Warriors answered in the bottom half of the inning with 6 runs and doubled up Champion at 8-4.
The Chargers tied it in the top of the fourth with 4 runs, but Pieper fired back with 3 runs in the bottom half of the inning and pulled ahead, 11-8.
However, Champion put together a 3-run fifth inning and knotted it up at 11-11.
Neither team scored in the final two frames, so it went to the eighth inning and that’s when the Chargers made their move.
Allison Candler was hit by a pitch and then Breah Lazarro singled to put runners on the corners. With two outs, Anna Hurst came up and singled to center field to score Candler and the Chargers were up 12-11.
Pieper still had to bat in the bottom half of the inning, but the Charger defense hung tough and retired the side in order. After giving up 11 runs through the first four frames, Champion’s defense didn’t allow another run over the last four innings.
The Chargers outhit the Warriors, 13-6, and Torin Tucker doubled, hit 2 singles and scored 3 runs, Hannah Perez doubled and tripled, scored 3 runs and picked up 2 RBI, Mylie Parker tripled and singled and scored twice, Reese Rogers hit 3 singles and scored a run, Hurst drove in the winning run and took 2 walks, while Candler scored the winning run.
Parker went the distance in the circle and tossed 154 pitches in eight innings. She gave up 3 earned runs, 4 walks and struck out 12.
