New Braunfels managed to split its series with the Boerne Champion baseball team after Unicorns pitcher Nolan Moore was basically unhittable during last Friday’s game at Charger Field.
Moore, a Texas State signee who had a few big-league scouts looking at him on Friday, helped to shutout the Chargers 3-0 behind a 1-hitter.
Champion splits the series with the Unicorns after taking last Tuesday’s contest. The Chargers were back at it Saturday with a district game against Veterans Memorial, in a contest moved up a few weeks.
The Chargers won that game 14-10 and are 19-7 overall and 8-4 in district.
Champion plays two with Wagner this week and hosted the Thunderbirds on Tuesday and play at Wagner on Friday. They close out the regular season next week with two games vs. Kerrville Tivy.
Vs. New Braunfels
Moore topped out around 93-94 miles per hour consistently and Champion’s only hit against him came from Aidan Smith with a single in the fifth frame.
Moore tossed three perfect innings, but the Chargers put runners on in the four other frames, although they couldn’t bring in a run.
Cal Isley walked in the first, Owen Kuhl was hit by pitch in the third, Smith singled in the fifth, and in the seventh, the Chargers put two runners on base after Austin Garritano walked and Andrew Harrison was hit by a pitch.
With runners at first and second in the seventh and only one out, Moore struck out the final two batters to end it.
Moore fanned 14 of the 26 batters he faced and tossed 104 pitches in the game.
New Braunfels scored a single run in the third and it was 1-0 going into the sixth when the Unicorns pushed in another run to make it 2-0. NB added its third run in the seventh frame.
Sawyer Smith went 5.1 innings on the hill for the Chargers and gave up 5 hits, 1 earned run, 4 walks and struck out 3 on 90 pitches.
Aidan Smith and Parker Davis also tossed in the game, with Davis striking out 2.
Vs. Veterans Memorial
While the Chargers struggled to hit the ball Friday, that wasn’t the case in Saturday’s game vs. the Patriots.
Champion recorded 14 base knocks, including two home runs, a triple and two doubles to defeat Veterans Memorial, 14-10.
Garland Whitehead banged out a 3-RBI triple in the first frame and doubles from Owen Kuhl and Jaedyn Yamaguchi, along with a 2-run home run by Cal Isley, helped give Champion a 9-1 lead by the third inning.
Just when it looked like it might be headed for a run rule, the Patriots made a late push and tallied 9 runs over the final four frames.
Veterans Memorial closed the gap with 6 of those runs in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to four Champion errors, and it was 9-7.
Champion never lost the lead but couldn’t really shake the Patriots the rest of the way either. Both teams scored single runs in the fifth, and in the sixth frame, the Chargers tallied 3 runs but Veterans Memorial answered with 2 in the bottom half of the frame, and it was 13-10.
Yamaguchi smacked a solo homer in the top of the seventh to make it 14-10, while the Patriots only put one runner on in the bottom of the seventh but didn’t score.
In the game, Yamaguchi homered, doubled, singled, scored 3 runs and picked up 3 RBI, Whitehead tripled and singled, drove in a run and scored once, Isley hit one out of the park and singled, scored 2 runs and drove in 2 runs, Kuhl doubled and hit 2 singles, scored 2 runs and picked up an RBI.
Mark Thompson and Austin Garritano both scored 2 runs each.
Pearce Kelly picked up the win from the bump and gave up 1 hit, 1 run, no walks and struck out 2 in three innings of work. Jackson Melanson also tossed an inning and fanned 1, while Kuhl threw the final 3 frames and sat down 2 batters and didn’t issue a walk.
NOTES: Boerne High (8-3 in 26-5A) only played one non-district game last week and takes on Pieper for two 26-5A contests this week. The Greyhounds hosted the Warriors Tuesday and play at Pieper Thursday. They have one game with Wagner left on the schedule and then take on New Braunfels to close out the regular season next week.
