The Boerne Star returned from the South Texas Press Association’s April 10-12 convention in New Braunfels with awards in news, sports, photography and design categories for its 2024 coverage.
Managing Editor Jeff Flinn brought home a first-place award in the STPA Division 3 feature writing category. The winning entry included an Oct. 27, 2024, article about the placement of a “Just Kidding” billboard beneath a “Vote Democratic” billboard; and a Feb. 25, 2024, piece about the Kirl family of Fair Oaks Ranch and their home-grown business, Le Sauce & Co.
Second-place awards were earned in two photo divisions, news photos and feature photos.
News photos submitted represented the collapsed bleachers at the Kendall County Fairgrounds, an August accident that resulted in one person’s death; and a December photo capturing two vehicles on top of fencing that collapsed and killed a teacher and a student at a Boerne area Montessori.
Feature photos included a July feature about a young taxidermist who took second place in a state taxidermist competition; and a photo of a sleeping baby on Santa’s lap, as Santa joins the toddler and closes his eyes, during the annual Dickens on Main event held Nov. 30.
Newswriting garnered Flinn two more awards — coverage of the December Montessori incident; and for a July article about a Boerne man’s place in the national spotlight after the man who attempted to assassinate President Trump was killed wearing a T-shirt bearing his company’s name.
A fourth second-place award went to the Star’s Michele Lee for the layout and design of one of its Lifestyles pages.
Third- place awards were earned by the Star in the General Excellence category; two by Sports Editor Kerry Barboza, for overall sports coverage and for sports photography; by Flinn for column writing; the Star for headline writing; and for the Star’s Special Section entry in covering the April eclipse.
The newspaper’s awards were enough to garner third place in the Sweepstakes category.
