There was a lot riding on the outcome of Thursday’s 26-5A softball game between Champion and Kerrville Tivy at Charger Field.
It was pretty simple – Thursday’s winner claimed the final postseason spot up for grabs in 26-5A and the loser was done for the year.
The Chargers came close to making the playoffs this year, but the Lady Antlers played well on Thursday and prevailed, 8-2.
Champion finishes the year at 6-10 in district and was 8-11 overall this season.

Prior to Thursday, the Chargers defeated Wagner on Tuesday, 20-1, to have a chance going into Thursday.

The Chargers defeated Wagner one base hit at a time after they recorded 14 base knocks on Tuesday and 13 of them were singles.
The Chargers batted 33 times in the game and scored in the first four innings. Champion was up 10-0 by the third frame and then blew the lid off the game with 10 runs in the fourth inning.
Champion batted 13 in that fourth frame before the Thunderbirds turned a double play to get out of the inning.
Anna Hurst led the Chargers hit parade with 4 singles, 4 RBI and scored 3 runs, while Torin Tucker also plated 3 runs and Abby Brehmer picked up 2 singles, drove in 2 runs and scored twice.
Aidan Kavanagh, Bella Mamadaliyev, Hannah Perez and Allison Candler all scored twice, while Lilly Ritchie and Mamadaliyev both pushed in 2 runs.
Mylie Parker threw 3 innings and struck out 6, while not giving up a hit or run, while Hurst tossed in the final frame and yielded a hit and a run.
