The road hasn’t been too kind to the Boerne High baseball team, at least in its last two games.
BHS was on the road for its last two 26-5A contests and dropped both as the regular season starts to wind down.
Last Thursday, the Greyhounds were at Pieper and gave up a late rally to the Warriors and lost, 5-4, and on Saturday, Boerne visited Wagner and dropped that contest, 8-4.
Boerne is 9-5 in district and 17-7 overall. They play two with New Braunfels this week and visited the Unicorns Tuesday and host them Friday.
The Greyhounds need to win both games this week to clinch a playoff spot, one win will get them a play-in game, and two losses and Boerne misses the postseason party.
Vs. Pieper
Boerne held a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh, but the Warriors rallied for 3 runs to win it, 5-4.
A walk, followed by 2 singles scored a run for the Warriors. An intentional walk and a sac bunt tied it at 4-4 and put runners at second and third with only one out.
The next Pieper batter, Gavin Hobbs, singled to bring in the winning run from third to end it and the walk-off win.
Boerne’s best offensive inning came in the third when they scored 3 of their 4 runs. Colton Shaver and Ronnie Scarbrough both singled and then Brooks Perez doubled to bring in Shaver and courtesy runner, Reese House and BHS led 2-1.
Perez moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a Walker Hill sac fly and it was 3-1.
Pieper answered with a single run in the bottom half of the inning to make it 3-2, but the Greyhounds added to their lead in the top of the sixth after House scored from third on a wild pitch.
The inning started with a Ryan Hooper double and his courtesy runner, House, moved to third on a ground out before he scored.
It stayed that way until Peiper rallied in the bottom of the seventh to split their series with Boerne after the Hounds run ruled them on Tuesday.
Jackson Grimes started on the hill but hit his limit and left at 109 pitches. Grimes fanned 8 and gave up 3 walks. Hudson McNew came in for Grimes in the sixth.
Vs. Wagner
The Thunderbirds drove away with the win on Saturday after they scored 7 of their 8 runs in the first three innings.
Wagner tallied 3 in the first, 2 in the second and third innings for the 7-0 lead. They added another run in the fourth frame and were up 8-0 before Boerne got on the board.
The Greyhounds tried to rally late and cut the lead in half with 3 runs in the sixth and another in the seventh but came up short 8-4.
Boerne scored its 3 runs in the sixth with two outs after Jake Perez reached on an error and then Reese House singled. Colton Shaver singled and brought in Perez and House. Shaver later scored on a Brooks Perez single.
In the seventh, Dylan Perez singled and Hudson McNew doubled. Jackson Grimes brought in Perez with a sac fly to make it 8-4 with only one out, but the next two batters popped up.
It was pitching by committee for the Greyhounds as McNew, Asher Wren, Eli Srp and Braden Ramirez all tossed in the game. Ramirez pitched the final 3 innings and only gave up a hit, no walks and struck out 3.
