That 10th win that the Boerne High baseball team has been chasing has proven to be pretty elusive for the Greyhounds.
After last Tuesday’s runrule victory over Pieper, the Greyhounds were sitting at 9-3 in 26-5A but have dropped their last three.
New Braunfels handed the Hounds their latest setback after they rallied on Tuesday to defeat Boerne with a walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh inning, 5-4.
Boerne slips to 9-6 in district and 17-8 overall. The Hounds hosted the Unicorns Friday and needed to win that game to force a play-in game. Any play-in game would be held Monday likely against Pieper or New Braunfels.
Two of their three losses since last week involved their opponents rallying in its last at bat to overcome a Boerne lead, as was the case Tuesday in New Braunfels.
The Hounds fell behind 1-0 but responded with 2 runs in the top of the fourth. Singles from Walker Hill and Dylan Perez, followed by a double from Jackson Grimes made it 2-1 in favor of BHS.
Ronnie Scarbrough reached in the fifth and his courtesy runner, Otis Skubal, later scored. Skubal moved to second on a passed ball and then on a ground out to first, a throwing error from first to third to try and get Skubal went into the outfield, allowing him to score and putting the Hounds ahead 3-1.
The lead didn’t last for long after the Unicorns answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth. A hit batter, two walks and three singles allowed NB to take a 4-3 advantage.
Boerne did well to keep it a one-run game after the Unicorns left the bases loaded in the fifth and sixth frames.
After not scoring in the sixth, the Hounds tied it up in the seventh. Jake Perez singled to start the inning. NB pitcher Nolan Moore struck out the next two batters, but Moore did walk Ronnie Scarbrough to put runners at first and second.
Brooks Perez came up and laced a single to right field to score Jake Perez and move Scarbrough to third, but the rally ended there, however, the Greyhounds had tied it up 4-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, Moore helped his cause with a single. A sac bunt moved Moore to second, prompting an intentional walk from the Greyhounds in hopes of turning a double play and putting the force on to get out of the inning, but Unicorn Carter Ragsdale spoiled those plans with a single up the middle to bring in the winning run.
Campbell Jackson started on the hill for the Hounds and went 4.1 innings. He gave up 6 hits, 4 runs, 2 walks and struck out 3.
Grimes finished out the game for BHS and tossed the final two frames. He scattered 3 hits, gave up an earned run and two walks, while sitting down 2 batters.
