It was all hands on deck last Friday at Greyhound Field when Boerne High hosted New Braunfels in a 26-5A baseball game.
BHS needed a win to have a chance at the postseason and force a play-in game, while the Unicorns had already wrapped up a playoff spot and were in the hunt for a district title.
Because both teams had something riding on the outcome, each squad used four pitchers in hopes of coming out on top.
Boerne held leads of 3-0 and 4-2, but the Unicorns closed out the game by scoring 9 runs in its final two at bats and went on to defeat BHS, 11-6.
The Greyhounds finish out 2025 at 17-8 overall and 9-7 in district and dropped their last four games in 26-5A. Only the top four make the playoffs and Boerne finished fifth in the district behind Champion (12-4), New Braunfels (124), Smithson Valley (11-5) and Pieper (10-6).
With a 1-0 lead last Friday, Brooks Perez hit a 2-run homer in the second to make it 3-0. The Unicorns cut into the lead with 2 runs in the fourth and it was 3-2.
The Greyhounds answered with a single run in the bottom of the fifth to double their lead at 4-2 after Dylan Perez singled to bring in Otis Skubal.
That’s when New Braunfels took control of the game. The Unicorns tallied 5 runs in the sixth and then pushed in 4 runs in the top of the seventh and never trailed from there.
However, the Greyhounds didn’t go down without a fight and Dylan Perez knocked one out of the park in the bottom of the seventh. Hudson McNew doubled and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 11-6 with two outs.
But from there, the next BHS batter grounded out to end it. Boerne had more hits than NB, 7-5, but also committed 6 errors, which allowed the Unicorns to score 7 unearned runs.
Jackson Grimes, Brooks Perez, McNew and Eli Srp all tossed for the Greyhounds, while the Unicorns also used four different arms in the game.
New Braunfels went on to defeat Pieper on Saturday to get its 12th win in 26-5A and finished tied for first with Champion.
