2-1
Last Friday’s opening- round baseball playoff game between the Geneva School of Boerne and Northland Christian turned into a pitcher’s duel.
Geneva’s Luke Roberson and Northland Christian’s Luke Edmonds didn’t give up much from the mound and runs were hard to come by.
In fact, neither allowed an earned run and only three total runs were scored in the game, and unfortunately for the Eagles, the Cougars tallied single runs in their last two at bats and went on to defeat Geneva, 2-1.
The Eagles close their season at 9-3.
Last Friday’s contest was 0-0 through the first three innings and the game moved along rapidly. It reached the halfway point – 3.5 innings – in 45 minutes because the pitchers were basically “mowing ’em down.”
Finally, in the bottom of the fourth, the Eagles scratched for a run. Chase Doran walked, then moved to second on a Gray Bruner bunt. Rooster Jons came up and singled to move Doran to third. A bad throw from the outfield on the Jons hit allowed Doran to score and made it 1-0.
It stayed there until the top of the sixth when the Cougars knotted it up. A walk and a single put runners at the corners with no outs.
The next batter struck out but the runner at first got in a rundown and was eventually tagged out at first, but the distraction allowed the runner from third to score and tie it up at 1-1.
In the seventh, the first Cougars batter reached on an error and then made it to second after he stole second. A double from the next batter allowed the runner at second to score and Northland Christian pulled ahead, 2-1.
Geneva still had their last bats since they were the home team, but Edmonds and the rest of the Cougars defense retired the side in order with a pop up, ground out and a strikeout to end it and end the Eagles’ season.
Edmonds struck out 11 batters, only gave up 2 hits and 2 walks, while Roberson scattered 3 hits, 3 walks and fanned 8.
Jons and TJ Cross recorded Geneva’s only two hits and Doran scored their only run.
