It was “KSU” — Kick Stands Up — at 10 a.m. Saturday, as dozens of motorcycle riders took part in Javelina Harley-Davidson of Boerne’s 15th annual Fiesta Motorcycle Ride and Fajitas and Ritas event.
Organized in conjunction with The Circle For Life, the ride served as a fundraiser for organ and tissue donor awareness and was a Fiesta-sanctioned event.
“What’s really exciting about this is that it is a fiesta sanctioned event. Last year we even had the Rey Feo come out,” said Candace McLerran, Javelina Harley Davidson marketing director.
“But we host this event because April is Tissue and Organ Awareness month, and we work with The Circle of Life and the local police department to do this every year. Despite the rain, we had a great turnout today.”
Before the riders set off, they are given a plate of chicken fajita street tacos and the option of a soft drink or water. The bikers then left the Harley dealership with a police motorcycle escort on their drive through the Hill Country to the heart of San Antonio’s Fiesta. Riders then gathered for an end-of-ride celebration at The Ridge at the Hill Restaurant.
The Circle for Life event supports the University Transplant Institute and provides financial assistance to hundreds of transplant patients and their families who experience exceptional difficulties during the course of their treatment.
These exceptional difficulties include situations in which money is needed to pay for gas, food, shelter, utilities, clothing, medications, lab work, transportation and time off work. The event has also raised funds for The Center for Life — a specialized facility in University Hospital to expedite the recovery of organ, eye and tissue. This first-of-its-kind recovery center allows families to begin their grieving and memorial services in a more timely manner, while saving additional lives through increased donations.
An organ donation can save as many as eight lives, bring sight to others, or improve as many as 75 more lives through tissue donation. To learn more about becoming an organ donor, visit thecircleforlife. com/about/.
McLerran and Javelina Harley Davidson are prepping their store for their biggest show of the year: the fourth annual Hill Country Vicla show on May 10. The event will feature live music, food trucks and raffles. Learn more by visiting javelinaharley.com.
