Charger entries at state track meet earn points, while two of them medal

AUSTIN – Boerne Champion had four entries at last weekend’s 5A state track and field meet in Austin – all on the boys side – and all four scored points, while two of them medaled and another just missed out on a state medal.

With all four entries tallying points, the Champion boys finished with 19 total points to place 11th overall in the final boys team standings.

Iowa Colony (74) took first in the team standings, while Frisco Heritage and Marshall tied for second with 34 points each.

Charlie Houck started things off Friday morning and raced in the 3200. He led for six of the eight laps at Myers Stadium in Austin on the UT campus, but El Paso’s Miles Westbrook was always on his hip, less than half a second behind for most of those laps.

Houck finished the seventh lap with a cumulative time of 8:08.02 and Westbrook was in at 8:08.25 heading into the final lap.

Westbrook began his kick on the bell lap and passed Houck to finish his final lap with a 1:02.31 and win by seven seconds, while Houck posted a 1:09.51 on the last lap to earn silver and earn 8 team points.

The rest of the running events were canceled on Friday because of the weather and resumed Saturday morning.

Jamarri Bowie raced in the 400 on Saturday and had a good start, staying with the pack. The pack didn’t thin out too much, but Bowie had a nice kick and finished in 47.43 to place third and earn bronze and 6 points.

The top 5 racers in the 400 finished in the 47-second range, with the winner, De’Trevyon Goudeau (from Marshall, Tx) posting a 47.34, while Miguel Chapa (from El Paso El Dorado) clocked in at 47.39 for second, followed by Bowie in at 47.43 for third.

The two runners behind Bowie recorded 47.67 and 47.75, so the top 5 were less than half a second apart.

Caleb Dehart raced next for the Chargers in the 800 and just missed out on a bronze after he was fourth with a time of 1:53.95 to pick up 4 more team points.

Dehart was sixth after the first lap but had a strong kick on the second lap and moved up a couple of spots to place fourth in 1:53.95, just behind the bronze-medal winning time of 1:52.93 and earned 4 team points.

Caden Gary of Lucas Lovejoy won the race in 1:50.74 and Colby Huntress took second in 1:52.27.

After running in the 3200 on Friday, Houck also raced in the 1600 on Saturday and finished sixth to pick up a team point with his time of 4:25.80.

Caden Gary of Lucas Lovejoy won the race in 4:14.60 and Westbrook from El Paso, who won the 3200, came in second in the race at 4:16.94.
