Rabies cases reported in Fair Oaks Ranch

Rabies cases reported in Fair Oaks Ranch

Two wild animals have tested positive for rabies in Fair Oaks Ranch during the past week.

City officials said it’s not unusual for staff to come across wild animals with rabies during the summer months, but two cases in one week is noteworthy.

The two incidents involved a fox in the Scarteen area and a skunk in the Man O'War area.

City Animal Services officer Sara Cleboski recommends residents check their yard for wild animals before letting their pets outside. The most recent captures were found by pets that were let out without the owners first checking the property.

Cleboski offered a few ground rules to follow to keep family and pets safe from rabies:

* Never approach or feed wild animals.

* Ensure dogs and cats are current on their rabies vaccinations, as required by state law and city code of ordinances.

* Consider protecting livestock and domestic ferrets by vaccinating them against rabies.

* If bitten or scratched by any animal, wash the wound immediately with soap and water, then seek medical attention to be assessed for a rabies exposure.

* Report animal bites and suspected rabid animals to city animal control, 830-249-8645.
