BOERNE — Sunny’s All-Day Brunch and Bar earned a 56 score on their routine inspection July 9 by the Kendall County Health Department, which found some major violations leading to such a low score.

Health department officials returned 24 hours and credited Sunny’s, at 518 River Road, with a much higher score, after improvements were made in just a day’s time.

Violations found on-site July 9 included: Improper thawing method; lack of hand sanitization; improper food handling; and lack of containing trash-lid, leading to insects.

Food was found being thawed at room temperature, as opposed to regulation temperature at 41 degrees or less in the refrigerator.

Sunny’s All-Day Breakfast and Bar opened last month along River Road to rave reviews. But as with all new restaurants, it encountered growing pains. But management took the time to correct many of them in just a 24-hour turnaround.

Cleaning procedures were not being followed, as a sink was not available for employees to use to wash their hands between duties.

Employees were handling food with their bare hands, when gloves are supposed to be worn instead.

Due to an open trash lid, a good number of flies were buzzing around, causing unsanitary environment around food.

The employees at Sunny’s stayed after work to resolve these issues the health office found — making for a space that is more in-compliance with health codes.

On the July 10 re-inspection, Sunny’s inspection score jumped to 89. The health office credited Sunny’s with: Adequate hand washing stations; using gloves while in contact with food; and garbage was maintained properly.

Sunny’s made major strides to get in-compliance with the county guidelines in short order.
