WHERE BOERNE EATS: A CLOSER LOOK

Boerne Short Stop was credited with a rare “100” score on a July 23 visit by officials from the Kendall County Health Office.

Though not impossible, it is somewhat rare for a food establishment, of any sort, to receive a perfect score in Kendall County, as low-mid 90s is more of the norm for high scores, according to health officials.

Short Stop, at 824 N. Main St., is considered a Risk Category 2 food establishment, indicating they sell mainly packaged foods — chips, bottled drinks, wrapped candy — but do have some hot food they sell to the public, such as pizza, sandwiches, chicken and beef crumbles.

On the same day, health officials went to Michoacán A Pedir De Boca — a.k.a. Boerne Michoacan — a local ice cream shop that is also a Risk Category 2 establishment, which scored a near-perfect score of 97.

The frozen treats were in safe condition to sell to the public while staff were on-point with tidiness.

The health office did make an onsite correction regarding no hand towels present for employees to dry their hands. The ice cream shop still had two points taken off due to this matter but rectified the issue in a matter of minutes, before health officials left.

Another minor issue at Michoacan was an employee chewing gum while working with food. Employees are not allowed to chew gum, tobacco, drink or eat while serving food.

Having establishments like both the convenience store and ice cream scoring so high stands as a testament to knowledgeable management and employees working together to have things situated properly, efficiently and functional.
