The first day of school at Curington Elementary School Tuesday saw a new management team in place with a longtime Curington supporter greeting parents as they dropped off their children.
Boerne ISD Board President Kristi Schmidt — who parented three Schmidt children through Curington over the years — stood curbside Tuesday, welcoming students to the 7:35 a.m. start of the first day of school for Boerne ISD students.
“Our theme this year is ‘Legacy Built Future Ready,’ and when I think about the legacy that has come through here, it’s really quite emotional,” Schmidt said.
Principal Michael Joannou began day one of his reign at Curington standing outside, watching parents line up as early as 7 a.m. to drop off their children.
“We see a lot of excited kids with big smiles on their faces, and they are glad to be back,” Joannou said.
Although he and Assistant Principal Gabriela Menchaca are both new to the school this year, Joannou has a bit of Curington history in his family.
“Obviously I am not from around here, but my wife (Chelsea) came to Curington as a little girl,” Joannou said. “So to be the principal of her elementary school means a lot to me, so it’s a very special day today.”
Joannou said he expected between 630 and 650 students to attend Tuesday’s opening day of school. Some of the students are legacy students, coming from a long line of Curington attendees.
“We’ve got a lot of our Boerne families who’ve had their kids come through, and they came to this school,” he said. So we’ve got generations coming through. The president of the board (Schmidt) is here, opening car doors. Her children came through Curington.”
The elementary school day begins at 7:35 a.m. Parents either dropped off their children in a drive lane manned by redshirted Cougar staffers, or parked and walked them to the cafeteria entrance. There, they exchanged final hugs as the children entered school and made their way through hallways to their grade-level homerooms.
