Bobcats hope to prove doubters wrong in 2025

According to Texas Football magazine, the Comfort football team is expected to finish last in a five-team district and out of the playoff mix, but that doesn’t bother Bobcats head coach Jay Rieken.

According to Texas Football magazine, the Comfort football team is expected to finish last in a five-team district and out of the playoff mix, but that doesn’t bother Bobcats head coach Jay Rieken.

Rieken said he understands why they’re picked to finish last but hopes to prove the doubters wrong.

“I get it, we didn’t have a great year last year and they’re not putting somebody at the top of the rankings that didn’t have a good season,” he said. “It’s up to us to prove everybody wrong. We have to upset somebody.”

Comfort went 2-7 last year and 0-4 in district. (Their season opener against Brackett was called due to lightning).

One of the reasons they struggled in 13-3A DII is because of the teams in the district – Blanco, Lexington, Rogers and Thrall. Those four teams beat the Bobcats by a combined score of 198-78. Two of those teams scored 60 points against Comfort.

Rieken said he knows the district is stout but isn’t making any excuses.

“We’re not going to have any kind of cake walk,” he said.

This is Rieken’s third year as the head coach and he said the program has moved forward.

“We’re already better, it’s been a learning experience,” he said.

Players to watch

Texas Football has players to watch as Carter Pape, Alexis Padilla, Jovani Zapata, Damian Neri, Hunter Ledlow, Omar Rivera, Jared Valadez, Dax Stehling, Matthias Toca, Case Barrett, Bryan Robledo, Gabe Gonzalez, Sloan Stransky, Daniel Ceniceros, Bryce Hanna and Owen Schulze.

Topper Sterling, their top running back from last year, who rushed for 1,113 yards and 11 TDs, didn’t return to the school for his senior season.

Pape returns as the signal caller and Ledlow had 500 yards from scrimmage last year.
