BOERNE — Two Champion High School students achieved National Merit Scholarship Semifinal status, among a group of 14 Boerne ISD students receiving recognition from the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program due to their exceptional performance on the PSAT/NMSQT test.
This National Merit Scholarship program recognizes and honors academically talented high school students across the country.
More than 1.3 million students take the PSAT/ NMSQT assessment annually. Almost 16,000 of the highest-scoring students can become Semifinalists, then advance to Finalists and compete for scholarships through application and recommendation processes.
Champion’s Ingrid Braden and Lauren Johnston reached Semifinalist status this year. They will continue in the process and be considered for the Finalist endorsement and a Certificate of Merit and additional scholarship awards.
The initial qualifying tier prior to the Semifinalist round is known as “Commended.” Out of the 1.3 million who take the test, roughly 34,000 students fall into this category. Champion’s Hunter Batt, Elizabeth Dell, Elizabeth Hoeppner, Avery Knight, Andrew Koch, Colt McCune, Conner Schwartz, Julia Simescu, Hudson Thrash, Sophia Wallace, and Joseph Winslow all reached the Commended level this year. Boerne High School’s Blythe Wilkins was also recognized as a Commended student.
Larissa Flores, Boerne ISD’s chief instructional officer, said, “The National Merit Scholarship Program started 70 years ago, and it’s long been a goal of our district for academically inclined students to participate and receive scholarship support through this program. We are extremely proud of our students for their dedication in taking the PSAT/NMSQT this year and of our teachers for their commitment in preparing them.”
