The smell of bacon, scrambled eggs, sausage and breakfast biscuits will permeate the Boerne City Lake Park area Sunday morning, as campers wake up from a night’s slumber in their tents and campers.
Saturday, Oct. 4 is the lone day of the year the city allows camping at the park, with space for as many as 300 campers that decide to take part in the 24-hour “Family Campout” experience.
This weekend is the 16th annual city-sponsored Family Campout at Boerne City Lake Park. Jessica Ybarra, city Parks and Recreation Department recreation coordinator, said campers who registered by Oct.
1 were allowed to pick out their own sites around the park, on a first-come, firstserve basis. “We do not limit the number of campsites or campers; the lake itself can hold up to 300 vehicles so there’s plenty of room,” Ybarra said. “Most of our participants are from Boerne, but we definitely have a few campers from surrounding areas, Fair Oaks, San Antonio, Kerrville, Bulverde, Bergheim and Universal City.”
Parks and Rec has games set for Saturday, including a scavenger hunt activity sheet for kids (received at check-in), kite decorating at 12:30 p.m., a small fishing tournament from 3-5 p.m., and dinner at 5:30 p.m. with awards and raffle giveaways to follow.
“Life can be hectic, and it’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day. The Family Campout is a reminder to slow down, be present, and enjoy time with your family and friends while surrounded by nature,” said Lissette Jimenez, Parks and Recreation director.
Tents dot the park grounds, although campers are allowed, but only in the park’s overflow parking area.
The Family Campout is off limits to vendors and food trucks, although the Parks and Recreation Department provides dinner for families that are interested, with hot dogs, chips, tea and lemonade available while supplies last. On Sunday morning, Parks and Rec will be offering coffee, juice and doughnuts starting at 8 a.m., again, while supplies last. There will be two Parks and Rec staffers camping out Saturday night, Ybarra said.
“This event is made possible by the deep dedication and immense effort put in by the Parks and Recreation Department. We truly love being able to provide these types of events for the city of Boerne,” she said.
Other than its “No Camping” rule, every other City Lake Park regulation must be adhered to.
