Boerne Book Festival attendees stood in a long looping line outside the Patrick Heath Public Library Saturday, waiting for their chance to meet and briefly speak with Kazu Kibuishi, one of the day’s featured authors.

Kibuishi, author of the “Amulet” series and artist for the 15 anniversary Harry Potter paperback covers, served as one of the featured attractions at the annual Boerne Book Festival at the library.

The Amulet series, published by Scholastic Graphix, has sold more than 10 million copies and has been on the New York Times Bestsellers list.

Local authors of all genres were in attendance Saturday, selling their own works and participating in several well-attended speaking panels.

Kibuishi stayed after his speech to sign autographs, where fans waited patiently for him to sign book 9 of the Amulet Series – Waverider.

“I like them,” said Luna Kondo, waiting with her parents for an autograph. “I think it looks really cool.”

Kibuishi created the Amulet series, a project he had been planning since he was 19 years old, after being reinspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s graphic novel series “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind” and Jeff Bone’s popular comic series “Bone.”

Kibuishi is both artist and author of the Amulet series, which promises to open the doors to a “beautiful but dangerous world of new friends, giant robots, and shadowy enemies.”

In addition to his Amulet series, Kibuishi illustrated the paperback novels of the Harry Potter Series for its 15 anniversaries, having been commissioned by Scholastic.

Kibuishi also provided his artistry for best-selling author Brandon Sanderson for his illustrated novel, “The Most Boring Book Ever.”

Kibuishi’s other published works include his web comic, Copper, a series he created shortly after the attacks on the World Trade Center. Copper is described as a quiet but calm kid with a fearful dog, Fred, by his side. The curious-fearful duo takes on new adventures with imaginative surroundings, according to the webcomic summary.

Kibuishi offered words of encouragement for aspiring authors and writers.

“Give yourself room and time to make lots of mistakes,” he said. “Just schedule it in.

“If you stay focused on trying to learn and get better at something — anything — you will learn to work with and around the mistakes over time,” he said, adding, “Stay patient and stay focused.”
