DINING DIVAS

EDITOR’S NOTE: Each month, the Boerne Star sends its “ crack team” of restaurant reviewers to an establishment in the area. These ladies — who have assumed the names of Pam, Erin, Nellie and Kelly, from TV’s “ The Office” — select a restaurant, show up unannounced, and take in all the establishment has to offer. This month: Sunny’s All Day Breakfast & Bar. The Dining Divas are back to dish with readers about must-try eateries in the area.

This time, the divas visited Sun- ny’s All-Day Brunch & Bar, a newly opened spot at 518 River Road featuring what they praised as a scrumptious menu. The overall experience left the divas impressed and satisfyingly full.

The divas had planned ahead and made sure to make reservations, and it’s a good thing they did, because Sunny’s fills up quickly. Diners can also save a spot through OpenTable.

The decorative elements of the eatery, with its wicker-covered lights, hanging white roses and ivy, and mint color tones, offered a relaxing atmosphere to patrons, the divas report. With an option to sit inside or out on the patio, the divas decided to stay indoors to channel more of the restaurant’s vibe.

For starters, the divas ordered the French toast dippers, served with a fruity compote and a side of syrup. Kelly especially enjoyed the crispiness on the outside and the softness on the inside. Erin noted that a choice of appetizers for a brunch spot is ideal for those who cannot decide between a sweet or a savory option.

At Sunny’s you can enjoy both. For the main course, Kelly ordered the Birria Benny, an English muffin stacked with tender birria, soft-poached eggs, classic hollandaise, pico de gallo and tortilla chips.

“It’s a very balanced meal,” Kelly said. “The birria really is tender, the hollandaise sauce is subtle, but delicious.”

Kelly found the red onion a little overpowering but noted that it was a personal preference. Her side of seasoned potatoes were nicely crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. A bit of Cholula hot sauce made the potatoes perfect.

Pam went with the loaded bagel, toasted and packed with a fried egg, smoky ham, bacon, avocado, chipotle mayo, arugula and melted cheddar. She loved the “messy perfection” with the crispy bacon and a peppery note of arugula but really swooned over the egg.

“The fried egg added a creamy, runny indulgence,” Pam said. “It melted right into the sharp cheddar and smoky-sweet chipotle mayo. Every bite hit with a mix of crunch, spice and comfort. This is a breakfast sandwich that doesn’t just satisfy, it wakes up your taste buds.”

A salted caramel-and-coffee blend complemented Pam’s dish. She labeled the beverage “a sweet masterpiece in a mug” mixed with velvety steamed milk and a sprinkle of flaky sea salt.

“Each sip is creamy, warm and balanced,” she said.

Nellie couldn’t pass up the “build your own bowl” option with its mouthwatering lineup of choices. She started with a fresh base of cilantro-lime rice and arugula, then layered on black beans, cucumber salad, zingy pico de gallo, feta cheese, tender grilled chicken and a cool drizzle of tzatziki. She dubbed this option “a total win on flavor and size.”

“I love to eat,” Nellie said, “but I only got through about half before grabbing a to-go box for the rest later. I’ve been to spots that overload on cheap stuff and barely sprinkle the good bits, but not this place — the chicken was there in spades. No flavor stole the show. Each one shone through distinctly and delightfully.”

Keeping it simple, Erin ordered the “Uncle Sampler” — two eggs any style, crispy bacon, grilled ham, seasoned breakfast potatoes and toasted brioche. Although Erin’s dish came to the table without the brioche, she found the meal filling. Like Nellie, Erin only got through half of her repast before needing a to-go box.

The sampler proved to be a standout, with ample serving sizes and well-seasoned meats and protein.

“I added Cholula in mine because I love spicy foods, and it paired with this breakfast staple perfectly,” Erin said.

The Dining Divas agree: Sunny’s All-Day Brunch proved to be another must-try place to break bread, offering great service, a variety of meal options and an excellent coffee and mimosa menu.
