Incident at Geneva game sparked uproar
Holy Cross had its football and volleyball programs placed on probation and even had some coaches suspended after they received sanctions and penalties from the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) for rules violations.
The Holy Cross football team Oct. 3 was caught using an electronic earpiece in their game with Geneva School of Boerne.
See TAPPS, page 9 The game was stopped for about 15 minutes while officials investigated whether the Knights were using an illegal communications device located in one of the helmets.
Holy Cross prevailed, 46-14, in that game — now logged as a 2-0 win for Geneva.
No electronic communication is allowed between players and coaches during a game, according to TAPPS rules.
The Knights football program has been placed on probation through June 30, 2027, while its head coach and assistant head coach will be suspended for three regular-season games.
Holy Cross, while having to forfeit games already played, will still be eligible to compete for a spot in the playoffs.
The Holy Cross volleyball program was found to be in violation of coaching restrictions, according to TAPPS. Basically, their coaches were coaching players beyond the permissible period, or out of season through a club volleyball program.
