BOERNE — When it comes to chili cookoffs, the big question is, “beans, or no beans?” Chefs from around the area are invited to weigh in on the matter by participating in the first-ever “Cookin’ For A Cure For ALZ” on Sunday, Nov. 2.

Organizer Susan Storrie, a member of the Ride To End Alzheimer’s group, in support of the Alzheimer’s Association, cooked up the idea of a chili cookoff to raise funds to fight a disease that claimed the lives of her mother in 2017 and brother in 2022.

“Nowadays, everyone knows someone whose life has been affected by these devastating diseases,” Storrie said, referring to Alzheimer’s and dementia.

The cookoff will be held at Mikey’s Chicken & Tavern on Interstate 10 West in Boerne on Nov. 2. Team cooking begins at 8 a.m., with public tasting scheduled for 1 p.m. and judges’ tasting set for 2 p.m. Winners will be announced at 3 p.m. in the non-sanctioned cookoff.

The prize package for first place is valued at $500, with second at $300, and third, worth $100.

Mikey’s opens its restaurant at 11 a.m. and has pledged a 10% giveback of food sales through 4 p.m. to the Alzheimer’s research fundraising effort.

A $50 donation gets a cook-off team entered. Each team will have a 12-foot-by-12-foot space for their preparation and cooking, and it’s BYOC — bring your own canopy, or cover. Cooking is limited to propane and “quiet” generators, as no openflame wood fires will be allowed.

Chefs must bring, and blend, all ingredients on site. Each team will be expected to prepare two quarts of chili for judging, and another three gallons for the public choice tasting. Cups, spoons and ballots will be furnished.

Posters advertising the cookoff contain a QR code that can be used to secure application for team entry. Otherwise, interested chefs or teams can reach Storrie at 210-275-3998, or at: [email protected].

Mikey’s Chicken & Tavern, at 25930 I-10 West, has plenty of free parking for entrants, Alzheimer’s research supporters and anyone wishing to attend ... whether you like your chili with beans, or without.
