KERRVILLE — The Boerne Greyhounds emerged from Kerrville Friday with a district title and their ninth win in a row, a 62-35 victory over Kerrville Tivy that saw Boerne score touchdowns on all seven of its first-half possessions.

The win means the Greyhounds (9-1, 6-0) will host a first-round playoff game in Boerne ISD Stadium Friday, likely facing the Corpus Christi Ray Texans, who lost their season finale Friday to drop to 5-5, 2-2 in district action.

Boerne got two rushing touchdowns each from Jeff Morrison and Callan Combs to go with three touchdown passes by quarterback Grant Sweeney. Two fourth-quarter field goals from Diego Jimenez put the game away.

The Greyhounds found themselves in a track meet early on, as both teams scored easily on their opening possessions. Combs’ first TD run of the night, a 4-yarder, gave Boerne a 14-7 lead. But Boerne’s Hadden Silva intercepted a Colin Rose pass on Kerrville’s next possession, returning it to the Kerrville 16. Three plays later, Morrison was in the end zone for Boerne, giving the ‘Hounds a 21-7 lead.

But Kerrville didn’t go away, going 74 yards in 13 plays for a TD, trimming the Boerne lead to 21-14. The Antlers recovered an onside kick and had the ball on the Boerne 48 with the chance to drive for the tying score.

But Boerne safety Kole Traylor had other ideas, picking the second Tivy pass of the quarter, returning it to the Boerne 43. On the very next play, Sweeney found tight end Beau Dayoc wide open behind the secondary for a 57-yard TD pass. The extra point made the score 28-14 with a minute remaining in the first quarter.

The Boerne defense continued to flex its muscle, forcing Tivy to punt on a fourth-and-29 situation. Nine plays later, Sweeney again hit Dayoc, this time from 19 yards out, and Boerne had a three-touchdown lead, 35-14. Dayoc, with one previous touchdown catch all season, now had two in just one half of play.

The two teams traded touchdowns the rest of the half enroute to a 49-28 Boerne halftime lead.

Both teams scored on their first drives of the second half — Boerne finding the end zone on a Sweeney-to-Will Traylor 36-yard pass-and-catch for the 56-35 lead. Boerne kept the Antlers from scoring the rest of the night, twice stopping them on fourth down while tacking on two Diego Jimenez field goals of 27 and 34 yards for the 62-35 final.
