The National Weather Service has issued a “red flag warning” for Tuesday for most of South Central Texas, including Kendall, Kerr, Gillespie, Comal and Bexar counties.
The weather service is forecasting southerly winds of 10 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph during the day, and relative humidity in the 15-25% range. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and drought conditions can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly, the NWS said Monday. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
Kendall County is already under a burn ban, prohibiting the use of open flames or burners. Additional tips to avoid fires include:
* Avoid using barbecue grills in gusty conditions. Dunk charcoal in water until cold, when finished.
* Extinguish all outdoor fires properly; drown fires with plenty of water.
* Make sure chains are not hanging loose on vehicles, because they can create sparks and start fires.
* Do not perform any welding activity.
* Do not throw cigarettes or matches out of a moving vehicle.
