Fair Oaks Ranch rabies case confirmed

FAIR OAKS RANCH — A raccoon that tested positive for rabies has city Animal Services sounding a cautionary note.

The animal was removed last week near Rocking Horse Lane and tested positive for the virus, which can spread with fatal effects to other mammals including humans.

To protect family and pets, residents are asked to check yards for wild animals before letting pets outside.

Never approach or feed wild creatures, and ensure dogs and cats are current on rabies vaccinations, as required by state law and city ordinances.

Residents are asked to consider protecting livestock and domestic ferrets by inoculating them against rabies.

If bitten or scratched by any animal, officials advise washing the wound immediately with soap and water, then seeking medical attention to be checked for rabies exposure.

Residents are asked to report sightings of suspected rabid animals to the city’s animal-control unit at 830-249-8645.

Signs of rabies can include nocturnal animals being seen in daylight, behavioral changes including aggression or extreme friendliness, staggering, confusion, paralysis and uncontrolled drooling.
