Saturday event at cemetery pays tribute to veterans
Volunteers are being sought to help Saturday with Boerne’s Wreaths of Honor event, which memorializes area veterans.
Hosted by SEnergy at 10 a.m. in the Boerne Cemetery, 820 N. School St., volunteers will place more than 850 wreaths on the headstones of deceased servicemen and women. So far, the effort has garnered support from about 120 volunteers.
“We are expecting around 60 this Saturday, but we encourage more volunteers to come out,” said Ann Pettigrew with SEnergy. “You can sign up on our website or you can just show up.” To help, visit poweredbysenergy. com/wreaths-of-honor/ or email Amber Asher at [email protected].
The annual tradition started in 2019 and is now broken into four parts.
The flagging ceremony was conducted Nov. 15, with community volunteers marking every headstone receiving a wreath. On Nov. 29, helpers replaced the bows on the wreaths at 28 Songs Brewhouse + Kitchen.
The wreath-laying this weekend will be followed by a pickup event 10 a.m. Jan. 10. “We received so much support from local businesses,” Pettigrew said. “The local UPS store printed out the commemorative cards that will go on the wreaths; Black Rifle Coffee Co. is providing coffee for our volunteers on Saturday; and Stephen Rose Portraits has volunteered their assistance, too.”
The weekend event will open with remarks from Joseph Milligan.
Volunteers receive a T-shirt and will be assigned an area to place the wreaths.
According to Pettigrew, city officials and students at Boerne High School have also volunteered to help fluff the wreaths.
“Our Wreaths of Honor event is a meaningful way for SEnergy to give back and ensure that the memories of our veterans live on,” Pettigrew said. “We want to thank everyone for their support.”
