First freeze arrives Sunday morning

The first freeze of 2026 is expected to arrive early Sunday in Kendall County, producing calls for residents to remember the four P’s: people, plants, pets and pipes.

The National Weather Service’s advance weather forecast noon Friday indicated temperatures will dip below freezing for a seven-hour stretch.

The NWS predicts the mercury to hit 31 degrees about 1 a.m. and slowly drop to 27 degrees through 3, 4 and 5 a.m., before climbing as the sun comes up.

By 8 a.m., meteorologists said the mercury should hover around 34 degrees, rising to a noon high of 52 degrees.

However, those hours of below-freezing temperatures can be harmful, especially to plants and pets.

Officials urge those who keep pets outdoors to provide a way to keep them warm or bring them inside.

Gardeners say most plants fare best when covered overnight from the cold, which helps preserve heat.

Exposed pipes and faucets should be shielded as well, and inside the home, water should be allowed to slightly drip until the freeze lifts or temperatures climb above 32 degrees.

Those who go outside should be warmly dressed for the occasion and in layers, officials said.

Boerne is not expecting to staff any extra patrols or crews, with the chance of precipitation being no higher than 5 percent, according to the NWS outlook.
