THE BOOKWORM
Free tax help
This seems like old news, since so many people have already made their appointments, but we want to make sure everyone has a chance to sign up for free tax help, courtesy AARP Tax Aide Foundation volunteers.
The certified accountants are here each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
All federal income taxpayers are eligible for this free preparation and electronic filing; however, when the appointments are all booked, we will not be able to add new slots, so book it today.
To book an appointment: Visit boernelibrary.org and click on the “Tax Help” button. You will be redirected to the page where you can make your appointment.
Appointments run all the way through April 15, which is Tax Day.
Black History exhibit
February is Black History Month, and the library is observing it by showcasing a special exhibit, “The Invisible Diamond,” honoring black baseball teams in San Antonio and the U.S.
The exhibit will be on display in our gallery Feb. 11-21, with a special closing event the 21st at 10 a.m. featuring the Hill Country’s own Dick Butler and Clifton Fifer Jr. to discuss black baseball in the Hill Country.
This special display is from the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum’s travel exhibit program.
Gung Hay Fat Choy
The western world has declared Jan. 1 to be celebrated as the beginning of the new year. However, most Asian cultures celebrate using a different calendar. Our library likes to get in on the fun of celebrating both.
On Monday, Feb. 23 at 3:30 p.m., families are invited to the library’s youth activity room to celebrate Chinese New Year, in the year of the Flaming Horse.
This program is open to all and includes a flaming horse craft and fortune cookies.
Miss Yaping will invite everyone to participate in a dragon dance that features thrilling music. Weather permitting, we may even take the party outdoors for a bit.
New desk is here
The library lobby has had a big facelift to start off the new year. We have a completely new circulation desk, with better functionality and a warmer appearance.
The reserved items have a permanent home across from the new desk, and one of our self-check machines will eventually be situated near the reserves. Stay tuned.
Warming station report
It’s not often that librarians and libraries are considered front line, but we are always willing to step when the need arises.
With amazing help from Hill Country Family Services, the Boerne Rotary clubs and several of our city departments, we hosted our first warming center of the year recently.
On Jan. 24-25, we welcomed anyone who needed a warm, safe place to get out of the inclement weather for a while. There were books, games, Wi-fi access, food and warm clothing also available.
Modernized bookshop
The Bookshop Under the Windmill is now accepting credit cards.
Just in case you haven’t heard about the most charming used bookshop in the Hill Country, let me tell you more. The store, run completely by volunteers, is located next to the library and it’s literally under a windmill. Operating hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
Once you set foot in this magical little kingdom, you can discover fiction and nonfiction books, children’s books, movies, magazines, puzzles and more.
Proceeds come back to the library to help us accomplish our mission.
Library closure Feb. 16
The library will be closed on Monday, Feb. 16, in observance of Presidents’ Day. We will reopen on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
Keep in mind that you can still conduct much of your library business either through our website or mobile app.
