WHERE BOERNE EATS: A CLOSER LOOK
EDITOR’S NOTE: The Boerne Star meets twice monthly with Kendall County Health Inspector Brenda Bell and her staff, to bring us our newest feature, “Where Boerne Eats: A Closer Look.”
The Hill Country is known for relatively mild winters, but these last few weeks have proven to be abnormally chilly. While you can always warm up with a fire, grabbing a nice cocktail is ideal, too.
This week, the Star looked into reports by Kendall County Health Inspector David Sueltenfuss after he visited establishments where patrons can stop and enjoy a drink.
The Board Couple, 804 High St., Comfort Hours: 4-9 p.m. Saturdays only
Wine, charcuterie boards, beers — The Board Couple has all three and more, including a rental space for special occasions such as bridal showers and corporate team-building events.
Libations cover pinot noirs, cabernet sauvignons and even sparkling wine. The charcuterie boards can be made for two, or if you’re out with friends, order a “feast style” board to enjoy the different cold meats, cheeses and fruits. Vegetarian options are available.
During his stop, Sueltenfuss noted a few missing date annotations exceeding the required seven-day limit. The staff made immediate corrections.
Score: 98
Drink Texas Boerne, 31138 Interstate 10 West Hours: 2 p.m. to midnight Sunday-Wednesday, 2 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Thursday-Saturday
Drink Texas Boerne has a cocktail menu that runs from cucumber martinis to prickly pear coolers, as well as cold beer on tap. The Texas Peanut Butter Old Fashioned, a popular dessert cocktail, is made from Texas Ranger peanut butter whiskey, chocolate bitters and simple syrup.
During his inspection, Sueltenfuss made a few observations requiring corrective action: An ice machine with mildew was discarded on-site; used cloths piled up in a bucket from the previous day’s use; moldy water inside one of the keg coolers; unclean floors underneath the ice bin; improper storage of cut limes and lemons; and the previous inspection had not been posted.
Score: 93 Salvador Dobbs, 512 River Road Hours: 3 p.m. to midnight Sunday-Saturday with happy hour 3-7 p.m.
Known for being one of the “late spots” in Boerne, Salvador Dobbs — built in the style of 1800s German architecture — used to be a toy shop. Today patrons can stop by and grab drink while enjoying live music. Two of the signature cocktails include an Old Fashioned and a French 75.
During Sueltenfuss’s visit, he noted an ice machine heavy with mildew, an expired food-handler certificate and a dog on the premises that was not a service animal.
Score: 94
Twelve to Twelve, 1491 S. Main St. Hours: noon to midnight Tuesday-Saturday
Twelve to Twelve’s doors have only been open since Jan. 9, expanding Boerne’s nightlife with a speakeasy and “stylish cocktails,” according to its website. Located just south of downtown, the lounge offers cocktails crafted by skilled mixologists, noted “Visit Boerne Texas.”
Sueltenfuss did not observe anything that required corrective action.
Score: 100 Public health inspections are open to the public.
