Early childhood scores, goals soar

Even as Boerne Independent School District trustees Monday approved adopting legislative education goals, officials reported early childhood scores are above state averages across the board.

Figures show the district trending double-digits, educators added. Renee Munn, director of early childhood learning, led a brief review of the BISD’s efforts to achieve, and excel, in early childhood learning areas.

“Our proposed early literacy goals (are) to increase performance from 75% to 80% over the next five years,” Munn said. In comparison, “The state benchmark is currently set at 60% and the state has not yet reached that target.”

Added Munn, “This places our district (performance and) goals at a significantly higher level, reflecting our commitment to high expectations and continued growth for all students.”

Munn also said the district’s Proposed Early Childhood Math initiative aims to rise from 69% to 74% in the next five years, outpacing the state’s average of 52%.

“We’re required to set goals for reading and math at third grade,” Munn said. “We set district goals, and each campus sets goals for themselves.”

The levels are based on the number of third-grade students who score “at grade level” or higher on proposed State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness testing.

In accordance with state House Bill 3 requirements, the board must adopt and post on the district website the Early Childhood Literacy and Mathematics Proficiency Plans and the College, Career and Military Readiness plans, also known as CCMR.

These plans outline annual goals for the next five years to improve reading and mathematics and strengthen college, career and military preparedness for graduating pupils.

“We want something attainable, but still ambitious because we always want to think about how we can ensure all kids are making progress and excelling in everything they do,” Munn said.

The goal setting begins with the campus improvement teams and district improvement teams, she said.

“Campuses right now are working with campus improvement teams, to start brainstorming for goals for next year,” she added.
