WHERE BOERNE EATS: A CLOSER LOOK

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Boerne Star meets twice monthly with the Kendall County Health Department to bring us our newest feature, “Where Boerne Eats: A Closer Look.”

In a growing community such as Boerne, health inspections by Kendall County play a vital role in protecting public well-being, officials said.

Behind the scenes, inspectors work to ensure kitchens at local eateries meet safety standards, food is handled properly and businesses comply with state regulations.

Here is a look at some of the fastfood chains the Kendall County Health Department recently visited.

Raising Cane’s, 1406 S. Main St.

Hours: 10 a.m. to midnight daily Raising Canes has been a popular pick for locals, offering chicken fingers or chicken-finger sandwiches served with crinkle-cut fries and a choice of a fountain drink or fresh-squeezed lemonade.

Other sides include buttered Texas toast and coleslaw.

Two observations were made during the inspection: The soft drink ice machine had mildew and one food-handler certificate was expired.

Score: 95 Bill Miller Bar-B-Q Restaurant, 31490 Interstate 10 West

Hours: 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily With over 70 years in the business, this family-owned venture offers menu options including brisket and smoked sausage plates, po’boys filled with sliced brisket or turkey, chicken fingers and salads served with a choice of meat.

Several observations were made during the health inspection: Food on the cold table needed to be placed back in the walk-in cooler; mildew grew in the ice machine (discarded on-site); no residual sanitizer in the final rinse of the three-compartment sink; and the cold table was observed at 51 degrees, but needed to be lower.

Score: 89 Whataburger, 621 W.

Bandera Road Hours: Open 24 hours all week One of the few stops that runs all hours, seven days a week, Whataburger’s menu features breakfast wraps until 11 a.m., burgers, seasonal sandwich melts, fried-fish sandwiches, Cobb salad and a choice of a fountain drink or an ice cream shake.

One observation during the health inspection: Pooled blood from hamburger patties was observed above the chicken stored below it. This was corrected on-site.

Score: 97

McDonald’s, 43 U.S. 87 Hours: Open 24 hours all week Joining the all- night crew, McDonald’s in Comfort offers the favorites it’s known for: Big Macs, burgers with double patties, double-cheese burgers, Quarter Pounders, chicken nuggets, fried fish, crispy chicken sandwiches and French fries. Also available all day is the McCafe menu, serving warm or iced coffees.

Two observations came from the survey: The large ice machine showed heavy mildew with deep scratches (ice discarded on-site); and the McCafe cooler needed to be adjusted to 41 degrees.

Score: 95 Health reports are government records open to the public.
