Revamps allow ‘more programming’ on outdoor turf

Enhanced workout spaces and a new turf wellness area await Boerne YMCA members when a ribbon cutting Friday unveils the facility’s upgrades.

The Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce will host the ceremony at 11:30 a.m. at the YMCA, 820 Adler St.

Shannon Gowen, a spokeswoman for the Greater San Antonio YMCA, said the umbrella organization for area Ys had been looking for ways to add some perks to the Boerne site.

“There’s the new outdoor area covered with turf, which is great for youth programming, and lends itself to other programming throughout the year,” Gowen said.

Turf wellness areas are indoor or outdoor spaces lined by synthetic ground cover designed for specialized fitness workouts, rehabilitation and recovery, according to an industry site. The turf offers better shock absorption, too.

“We have seen an increase in enrollment for yoga and Pilates classes, so this will allow us to do more programming on the outdoor turf,” Gowen added.

About half of the outdoor turf is shaded, allowing program directors to decide whether their event or class can scoot out into the sunlight or remain under cover.

The turf and some indoor upgrades have been in the works since January, Gowen said.

The Boerne YMCA underwent a major renovation in February 2024, including new machines.

To create a better “flow” for members, new arrangements of apparatus, benches, seats and room were made.

The interior improvements, Gowen said, “make it a little bit more comfortable for post-workout areas with coffee bars, different lounge seating and a hydro machine.”

She added, “We made it more of a recovery space to help them cool down after a workout, giving them more of that community space they are seeking.”

Friday’s event will include words from Mayor Frank Ritchie; Kim Blohm, Chamber CEO and president; and Louis Lopez, president and CEO of YMCA of Greater San Antonio.

The event is open to the public.

“We made it more of a recovery space to help them cool down.”
