Boerne High graduate Camden Johnson, who recently won a national championship with the University of Oklahoma baseball team, is expected to be selected in this weekend’s Major League Baseball draft.
Johnson is listed as the No. 93 prospect on Sox Machine and is listed just outside the top 100 at 116 on the MLB Pipeline and is expected to go anywhere between the third and sixth rounds.
Day 1 of the draft is this Saturday, July 11, with rounds 1-4. The second day of the draft is Sunday and consists of rounds 5-20.
Johnson said it’ll mean a lot for him to get drafted.
“It’s something I’ve always dreamed of. It’s a good possibility and we’re planning for it to happen, but I’m not against going back to school,” he said. “Whatever happens, I’m going to thank God and ask Him for guidance. I’ll be there with my family and it’s going to be one of the more exciting weekends in my life and I’m looking forward to it.”
Johnson just wrapped up his junior season with the Sooners and has one year of eligibility left if he chooses not to sign with an MLB team. He said he doesn’t care who drafts him.
After graduating from Boerne High in 2023, Johnson played at Wichita State for two seasons before transferring to Oklahoma where he batted in the No. 2 hole and played third base for the Sooners. He made some great athletic plays at third base during OU’s run to the title and definitely improved his draft stock.
Johnson said he wants to move back to the shortstop position where he played in high school and at Wichita State or to the outfield to use his speed. He’d prefer not to stay at third base but was glad to win a title at that position. He added that it was a great experience to win a national championship.
“ Getting to live on Cloud 9 for a few days afterwards was pretty incredible,” he said. “It’s settled in and ‘national champion’ has a good ring to it.”
Johnson joked that one of the hardest parts of winning a College World Series title was surviving the dog pile moments after they clinched the title. He said a few guys got bruised up but fortunately no one was seriously injured during the celebration.
“It was ugly; you could quickly tell nobody wanted to be the first one to go down. Everybody was kind of fighting to stay up,” he said. “It ended up being me that kind of went down, I grabbed on to the catcher’s gear and brought him down with me and then I went down sideways. I was down there on the bottom, I think there’s a video out there and it sounds like there’s a mic right in my mouth and you can hear me going ‘help, help.’”
