It should be a good year for the football teams from Boerne ISD, at least according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine.

The 2026 version of Campell’s magazine, called the Bible of Texas high school football, just came out and has both the Chargers and Greyhounds making it four rounds deep in the playoffs or to the regional finals in their respective classifications.

Comfort is predicted to be a playoff team, while Geneva School of Boerne will be fighting for a spot, according to the magazine.

Boerne Champion

The Chargers are predicted to finish second in District 13-5A DI behind two-time defending state champions Smithson Valley.

Austin Anderson and Seguin are picked to place third and fourth and earn playoff spots. Also in the district are Austin McCallum, Manor, Lockhart, Kyle Lehman and Bastrop Cedar Creek.

Champion is ranked No. 19 in its preseason 5A-DI poll and Smithson Valley is ranked No. 2, behind DeSoto, which dropped down to 5A from 6A, where they won three state titles in the last four years. DeSoto dropping to 5A is called a “seismic shift” by the magazine, which predicts they will win their fourth title in five seasons.

The magazine says Champion and Smithson Valley will meet in the Region IV-5A DI championship game, and the Rangers win to advance to the state semifinals.

Something fun that the magazine does (at least online) is list the top quarterback and running back duos in each classification. Champion QB Julian Navarrete and RB Caleb Farias are listed as the No. 4 ranked duo in 5A.

Here’s some of what the magazine said about them: “Boerne Champion reached the third round of the playoffs for the first time since 2019 last fall. With seven returning starters on each side of the ball, headlined by the elite QB/RB duo of Julian Navarrete and Caleb Farias, Coach Blane Ellis believes his squad could be even stronger in 2026.”

The magazine also notes that Navarrete will be a three-year starter and threw for 2,265 yards and 31 touchdowns last year, while Farias led the district last season with 1,087 rushing yards and averaged 7.5 yards per carry.

Boerne High

Boerne High is ranked No. 4 in the Campbell’s 5A-DII preseason state poll and the magazine also lists Greyhounds quarterback Grant Sweeney as the preseason allstate 5A quarterback and the District 13-5A DII preseason MVP.

The Greyhounds are predicted to win their district ahead of Alamo Heights, Liberty Hill and New Braunfels. Also in the district are New Braunfels Long Creek, SA Veterans Memorial and Liberty Hill Legacy Ranch.

Both Legacy Ranch and Long Creek are in their first year as varsity programs.

BHS has won three regional championships in four seasons and went 13-2 last year. They’ve played on Thanksgiving weekend six times in the last eight seasons, which is a milestone for a high school team. They are picked to go far again this year.

The magazine predicts that Boerne will make it past Thanksgiving weekend in 2026 and will eventually face district rival Alamo Heights in the Region IV-5A DII championship game. Campbell says the Greyhounds will beat the Mules (like they did last year in dramatic fashion) and advance to the state semifinals.

Sweeney, who has a nice picture in the magazine, returns for his senior season after totaling 5,371 yards from scrimmage after throwing for more than 4,000 yards and running for more than 1,000. According to Greyhounds head coach Brett Sawyer, Sweeney’s 5,371 yards ranked fourth in the nation last year in total yards from scrimmage.

Comfort High

The Bobcats are in District 5-3A DII and are picked to finish fourth behind Blanco, Poth and Stockdale, but ahead of Nixon-Smiley, Karnes City and San Antonio YMLA.

If Comfort finishes fourth, they will make the playoffs for the fourth time in the last five seasons, but it won’t be easy in a district that contains state-ranked Blanco (No. 9) and Poth (No. 11).

However, playing good teams is nothing new for the Bobcats team, which played three top 10 teams in the state towards the end of last season. They tangled with Lexington (No. 10), Blanco (No. 9) and then Tidehaven (No. 1) in the last three weeks of their season. Their game against Tidehaven was in the first round of the playoffs.

The magazine notes: “Comfort’s size up front will help their running game, which (head coach Jay) Rieken lists as a strength. That’s good news for QB/DB (Omar) Rivera. He also had two interceptions on defense and is a reliable kicker.”

Geneva School of Boerne The Eagles enter the 2026 season with a new head coach in Adam Foren. Geneva is picked to place fourth in the district, but Foren says he believes they have a chance to compete for the district title.

“Geneva is positioned to challenge for the district title,” Foren told the magazine.

The Eagles return all-state quarterback Caleb Quitadamo, who passed for 3,600 yards and 36 TDs, to go with 437 rushing yards and 11 more touchdowns.

In TAPPS, only the top three teams advance to the playoffs, but the organization does allow wildcards to qualify as a fourth-place team.

“Based on wildcard points, a fourth-place team can make it,” Foren said. “So each game, in district and out of district, will matter.”

The Eagles went 10-3 last year and reached the state semifinals on Thanksgiving weekend under former coach Bob Rosenstiel.
